GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 has a clock frequency of 625 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 790 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M330, which has a core clock frequency of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 315, in theory, should perform much faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 10880 (76%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 should be a lot (more or less 106%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10600 (106%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M330 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3240 (65%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
