Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 240

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 has a GPU clock speed of 1030 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 240, which features a core clock speed of 730 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R7 240 should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 240 28800 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 is much (about 41%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 240. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 240 14600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6000 (41%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M330 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 240 5840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (41%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
