GeForce GT 340 1GB vs GeForce GTX 880M

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 1GB comes with a core clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 850 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 96 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 880M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 954 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
GeForce GTX 880M 130 Watts
Difference: 61 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 880M is 135% faster than the GeForce GT 340 1GB overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 73600 (135%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 880M should be a lot (about 594%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 340 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 122112 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 104512 (594%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 880M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 30528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 26128 (594%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
