GeForce 830M vs GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU core speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm, which comes with clock speeds of 576 MHz on the GPU, and 999 MHz on the 896 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 216 SPUs as well as 72 Texture Address Units and 28 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm 171 Watts
Difference: 146 Watts (584%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm should perform much faster than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm 111888 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 97488 (677%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm should be a lot (approximately 152%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm 41472 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25008 (152%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm 16128 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7896 (96%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
