GeForce 830M vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 965M, which features GPU core speed of 944 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (140%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be a lot (more or less 267%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43952 (267%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (about 267%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 830M, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21976 (267%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
