GeForce 825M vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce 825M has a GPU core clock speed of 850 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 965M, which comes with a clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 825M 33 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 27 Watts (82%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 965M should be 344% faster than the GeForce 825M in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be much (about 344%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46816 (344%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be much (approximately 344%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 825M, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 23408 (344%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
