GeForce 825M vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce 825M features core speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M260X, which features core speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 M260X should in theory be much faster than the GeForce 825M in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X should be much (about 46%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6200 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 825M is a better choice, though not by far. (explain)

GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
