Radeon HD 4730 vs Radeon R9 M295X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4730 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 700 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M295X, which has core speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

In theory, the Radeon R9 M295X should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4730 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 176000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 118400 (206%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M295X should be a lot (approximately 329%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 96000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 73600 (329%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M295X is quite a bit (about 329%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4730, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 24000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18400 (329%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
