GeForce GTX 950 vs Radeon R9 M295X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1024 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1652 MHz on this particular model. It features 768 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M295X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 750 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1375 MHz on this particular card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
Radeon R9 M295X 125 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (39%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M295X should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTX 950 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 176000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
Difference: 70272 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M295X will be a lot (approximately 95%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 950. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 96000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46848 (95%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 will be quite a bit (approximately 37%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M295X, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M295X 24000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8768 (37%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
