Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 has a GPU clock speed of 780 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features a clock speed of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M270X is 350% quicker than the Radeon R5 M230 in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be quite a bit (approximately 86%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13400 (86%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M270X is superior to the Radeon R5 M230, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8480 (272%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
