GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) features a core clock frequency of 450 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 400 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It is comprised of 8 SPUs, 4 Texture Address Units, and 2 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M265X, which has core speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M265X should in theory be a lot superior to the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 65600 (1025%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X should be quite a bit (approximately 1178%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21200 (1178%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be quite a bit (approximately 922%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM), and will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8300 (922%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
