Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 828 MHz on this particular model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M265X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 575 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M265X, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 45504 (172%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X should be quite a bit (about 115%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12312 (115%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 is a little bit (more or less 16%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M265X, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1488 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
