Radeon HD 4670 512MB vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4670 512MB features a GPU core clock speed of 750 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 320(64x5) Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M265X, which features a clock frequency of 575 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M265X should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 4670 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4670 512MB will be a small bit (approximately 4%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 512MB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1000 (4%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X should be much (approximately 53%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4670 512MB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (53%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
