Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 600 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 800 MHz on this card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which features a clock frequency of 575 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 4790 should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon R9 M265X in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 30400 (42%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be a little bit (about 20%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3800 (20%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 is a little bit (approximately 4%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M265X, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 400 (4%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
