GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 790 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 48 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M265, which comes with a core clock speed of 725 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R7 M265 should be 27% quicker than the GeForce GT 315 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 6720 (27%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be much (approximately 74%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7400 (74%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M265 is the winner, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
