Radeon HD 5450 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The Radeon HD 5450 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 650 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M265, which comes with clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M265 will be 150% faster than the Radeon HD 5450 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be a lot (more or less 235%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12200 (235%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be a lot (more or less 123%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5450, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (123%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
