GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB has a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260X, which features GPU clock speed of 825 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M260X should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (67%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB is a lot (approximately 33%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260X. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6600 (33%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel fill rate, so in theory they should be equally good at at AA, and be able to handle the same screen resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
