GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 has a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 790 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M260X, which comes with core speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 M260X should theoretically be much faster than the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 38720 (153%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X will be much (about 98%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9800 (98%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M260X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
