GeForce 8800 GT 256MB vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB has a GPU core clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 700 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 112 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M260, which comes with core clock speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB, in theory, should be a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M260 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 44800 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (180%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB should be quite a bit (about 96%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16440 (96%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is superior to the Radeon R7 M260, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3880 (68%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
