Radeon HD 6950 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 6950 comes with core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a clock speed of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6950 will be 900% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 144000 (900%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 is a lot (approximately 274%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 51600 (274%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be a lot (more or less 240%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon R5 M255, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18080 (240%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
