GeForce GTX 470 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 470 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 607 MHz, and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 837 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 448 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 40 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 470 should in theory be much superior to the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 470 133920 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 117920 (737%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 470 will be much (approximately 81%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 470 33992 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15192 (81%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 470 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 470 24280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16760 (223%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
