GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti features a GPU core speed of 900 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be 516% faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 82496 (516%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be much (more or less 53%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10000 (53%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is superior to the Radeon R5 M255, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14080 (187%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
