Radeon HD 6790 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 6790 comes with a core clock speed of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1050 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 800 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which has GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6790 should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 118400 (740%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 will be much (approximately 79%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14800 (79%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 will be quite a bit (approximately 79%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5920 (79%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
