Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 has core clock speeds of 1006 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Geforce GTX 680 should be much faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 176256 (1102%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 680 should be a lot (more or less 585%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 109968 (585%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 680 is quite a bit (approximately 328%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R5 M255, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24672 (328%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
