GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB features a GPU core clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 112 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M230, which comes with a clock speed of 780 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB will be 260% faster than the Radeon R5 M230 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB is much (approximately 115%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18000 (115%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB is superior to the Radeon R5 M230, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6480 (208%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
