Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 comes with a clock speed of 668 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 828 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It features 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M230, which has GPU core speed of 780 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 3690/3830 is 66% quicker than the Radeon R5 M230 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 10496 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 should be quite a bit (about 46%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4912 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3690/3830 is superior to the Radeon R5 M230, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7568 (243%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
