GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTX 980M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB has core clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 980M, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1038 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 1536 SPUs along with 96 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 980M 100 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (5%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 980M should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 128000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 70400 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980M is a lot (more or less 197%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 99648 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 66048 (197%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980M should be much (more or less 592%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 66432 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 56832 (592%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
