GeForce GTX 970M vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 970M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 924 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 1280 SPUs along with 80 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which has GPU clock speed of 750 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 160 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce GTX 970M 75 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (142%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 970M should be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 67200 (233%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 970M will be much (about 1132%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 73920 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 67920 (1132%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 970M is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 44352 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 41352 (1378%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
