GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4550 256MB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4550 256MB, which features a core clock speed of 600 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is made up of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4550 256MB 25 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (140%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 965M should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 4550 256MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (about 1159%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4550 256MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 55616 (1159%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27808 (1159%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
