GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4790

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features a core clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 4790, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this model. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 4790 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GTX 965M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (60%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is quite a bit (more or less 215%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 41216 (215%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is superior to the Radeon HD 4790, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20608 (215%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
