GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 5870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features core speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5870, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 850 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1200 MHz on this particular model. It features 1600(320x5) SPUs as well as 80 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 5870 188 Watts
Difference: 128 Watts (213%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5870 is 140% faster than the GeForce GTX 965M in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 153600 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 89600 (140%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 is a little bit (more or less 13%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 68000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7584 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is a better choice, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5870 27200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3008 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
