GeForce GTX 570 vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 732 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 950 MHz on this model. It features 480 SPUs along with 60 Texture Address Units and 40 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 965M, which features a core clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 159 Watts (265%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 570 should in theory be much faster than the GeForce GTX 965M in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 88000 (138%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be much (more or less 38%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16496 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is a better choice, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 928 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
