GeForce 940M vs GeForce 9600 GT 512MB

Intro

The GeForce 940M features a GPU clock speed of 1072 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB, which comes with a clock speed of 650 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 65/55 nm design. It features 64 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is much (more or less 24%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4928 (24%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB should be much (more or less 21%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 940M, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1824 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
