GeForce 940M vs GeForce 9800 GT 512MB

Intro

The GeForce 940M has core clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB, which has a clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 65/55 nm design. It is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB should be 260% quicker than the GeForce 940M overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB will be much (approximately 31%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7872 (31%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB is superior to the GeForce 940M, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1024 (12%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
