GeForce 940M vs Radeon HD 3650

Intro

The GeForce 940M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1072 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 3650, which features a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR4 memory running at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 120(24x5) Stream Processors, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 3650 should perform much faster than the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (60%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M will be a lot (more or less 344%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19928 (344%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is superior to the Radeon HD 3650, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5676 (196%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
