GeForce 940M vs GeForce GT 220 GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, which has core speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 1012 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 is 102% quicker than the GeForce 940M overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16384 (102%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is much (about 157%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15728 (157%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is superior to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3576 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
