GeForce 940M vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 940M has a core clock frequency of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which has a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1050 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 800 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6770 1GB should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (320%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB should be much (more or less 40%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10272 (40%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB is a lot (about 68%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce 940M, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5824 (68%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
