GeForce 940M vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with a core clock frequency of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which features a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 480 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB should theoretically be much better than the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is much (approximately 34%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6528 (34%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2176 (34%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
