GeForce 930M vs GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 930M features clock speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3, which features a clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 is 78% faster than the GeForce 930M in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 25600 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 11200 (78%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M is much (more or less 153%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13472 (153%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 930M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3024 (69%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
