GeForce 930M vs GeForce GTS 150

Intro

The GeForce 930M features a core clock frequency of 928 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTS 150, which comes with a core clock frequency of 740 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 500 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTS 150 should in theory be much superior to the GeForce 930M in general. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 17600 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 will be quite a bit (about 113%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25088 (113%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 will be much (more or less 59%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 930M, and capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4416 (59%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
