GeForce 920M vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M features a GPU core speed of 954 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1050 MHz on this card. It features 800 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6770 1GB should be much faster than the GeForce 920M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 52800 (367%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB is a bit (more or less 18%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5472 (18%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6770 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6768 (89%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
