GeForce 920M vs GeForce GT 440 3GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 954 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular model. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GT 440 3GB, which features a core clock frequency of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also features a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 144 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 440 3GB should be much faster than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (200%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M should be quite a bit (about 114%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16272 (114%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 3GB should be a lot (approximately 87%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 920M, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6624 (87%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
