GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon R9 390X 8G

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB has clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 390X 8G, which comes with a core clock speed of 1050 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also features a 512-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2816 SPUs, 176 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

The Radeon R9 390X 8G should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 384000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 326400 (567%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 390X 8G will be a lot (approximately 450%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 184800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 151200 (450%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 390X 8G is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 67200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 57600 (600%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
