GeForce 8600 GTS vs GeForce GTX Titan Black

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS has core clock speeds of 675 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX Titan Black, which comes with a core clock speed of 889 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 384-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 2880 SPUs, 240 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
GeForce GTX Titan Black 250 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (233%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX Titan Black should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GTS overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 336000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 304000 (950%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan Black will be quite a bit (approximately 1876%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 213360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 202560 (1876%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan Black should be quite a bit (approximately 690%) better at AA than the GeForce 8600 GTS, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 42672 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 37272 (690%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
