GeForce 9800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX has a GPU clock speed of 675 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 1100 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 128 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which comes with core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce 9800 GTX 140 Watts
Difference: 77 Watts (122%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 9800 GTX should be a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (10%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GTX is much (approximately 125%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24000 (125%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 9800 GTX is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4400 (69%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
