Radeon HD 4650 1GB vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4650 1GB comes with clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 700 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 650 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 50 Watts
Radeon HD 4650 1GB 55 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (10%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB should theoretically be much better than the Radeon HD 4650 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4650 1GB 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (186%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4650 1GB will be quite a bit (more or less 23%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 4650 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3600 (23%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB will be a little bit (more or less 8%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 4650 1GB, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4650 1GB 4800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 400 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
