Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 has core speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which has core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4790 should be 60% quicker than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 should be a lot (more or less 23%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3600 (23%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4790 is superior to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4400 (85%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
