GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) features clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features core clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 47 Watts
Difference: 16 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) should be a lot (more or less 73%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3640 (73%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) is a lot (approximately 73%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and also capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1820 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
