GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB comes with a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6790, which features a core clock speed of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1050 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 800 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6790 should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 76672 (133%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 will be much (about 34%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8544 (34%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6790 is superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 912 (7%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
