GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB comes with a core clock speed of 513 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 792 MHz. It also makes use of a 320-bit bus, and makes use of a 90 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 20 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which features GPU clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 143 Watts
Difference: 27 Watts (23%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 35136 (55%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be a bit (about 17%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4176 (17%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is superior to the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11340 (111%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.

does anyone know what would the difference be if you sli the 8800 gts if it would be better or is it just easier to get a 550 ti

I have an SLI question... I have both cards and sadly look at my GTS 640MB sitting in an anti-static bag gathering dust.

Can I set-up a GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB in SLI with the GeForce GTX 550 Ti???

Thanks, Jay
